Even though Italy is a peninsula, one can not fail to mention the islands that are part of the Italian territory: namely Sicily and Sardinia, and also we should not forget the smaller islands, each one uniquely beautiful.
Just to name a few: Ischia and Capri, off the Amalfi coast, the archipelago of the Aeolian islands and the Island of 'Elba, historically linked to Napoleon Bonaparte, which is located a few kilometers from the Tuscan coast.
Mountain Places. Mountain lovers, winter and summer vacations, have plenty to choose from, they can range from the highest Alpine peaks to the most "gentle" peaks of the Apennines, which cross the country from north to the south. The beauty of the Italian mountains is irrefutable, prove of this was the recognition by UNESCO in 2009 declared the Dolomites World Heritage Sites.
Art and culture. For those looking for a holiday more related to art and history, Italy has undoubtedly an incredibly rich offering.
The beautiful country has a very unique feature: it's major cities like Rome, Florence and Venice represent "not to be missed" destinations for cultural tourism, it must be said that Italy offers such a wide variety of artistic heritage spread out across the country.
Traveling to Italy it is possible to encounter ancient medieval villages or small towns set among the mountains, sometimes almost uninhabited, but which still retain traces of its fascinating past.
Local traditions.The geographical distribution of Italian cultural heritage is even more evident if one refers to the concept of less traditional "culture", including the local traditions, dialects, religious holidays and even the eating habits of each individual region. Every Italian region, but also because each locality has its own identity, which deserves to be discovered.
The religious holidays are very numerous in Italy, and each has its own distinct character, some of them, as well as for their intrinsic meaning, they deserve to be experienced at first hand. Consider, just to name a few, the Feast of San Gennaro in Naples Sant 'Agatha in Catania and Santa Rosalia in Palermo.
Food and wine is another strong point of Italy, so as to be known around the world. Again what is striking is not only the quality but also the diversity of the dishes, each of which embodies the traditions of the place of origin. Many of the dishes that can be mentioned include: the Venetian Risi e Bisi (risotto with peas), the Genoese pesto trofie, the Apulian orecchiette with broccoli rabe, The Bucatini amatriciana from Rome, the Abruzzo pallotte cheese and eggs (meatballs of cheese). These are just some examples of what Italian cuisine has to offer.
Speaking of sweets, the cannoli, the gingerbread Tuscan and Neapolitan pastiera, just to name a few.
So Italy is a tourist destination that allows you to combine several passions, from art to food, through the traditions and local folklore.
