Discover Palermo
Palermo is the main city of Sicily, and is located in the north-west of the island; it is also its most populated city, after which there are Catania and Messina. The town has ancient origins: it was founded by the Phoenicians, but over the centuries it underwent numerous dominations (Greek, Arab, Norman, etc ...) that have contributed to enrich its artistic and architectural heritage, and also to determine its culture, making Palermo an interesting tourist destination.
From an architectural point of view, for instance, Palermo is very appreciated for its so-called Arab-Norman style of Sicily, which combines in a unique way Arab decorations, Romanesque architecture and wonderful Byzantine mosaics.
Palermo, thanks to its long and complex history, offers many tourist attractions of note, including the Cathedral, built in the twelfth century AD in the area where there was the most ancient Byzantine basilica. It shows a strong mix of different styles, due to many "additions" made over the centuries.
Other monuments that are worth visiting are certainly the Norman Palace, inside which you can admire the Royal Apartments and the beautiful mosaics of the Palatine Chapel; the Archeological Museum and the Catacombs of the Capuchin convent, situated in the homonymous square.
A good starting point for a visit to the central historic part of Palermo could be the Quattro Canti, the crossroads that divides the centre into four parts, located close to La Martorana, a beautiful church decorated with Byzantine mosaics.
A really appreciated aspect of Palermo is its food and wine, with many well-known Sicilian specialties such as arancini and Sicilian cassata.
Palermo, as well as being in itself an interesting city, can be a good starting point to visit the main tourist destinations of Western Sicily, such as Monreale with its beautiful Duomo, Cefalu, an important seaside resort, and San Vito Lo Capo, famous for its Cous Cous Fest, which is part of the province of Trapani
