Mattinata, a small city in the Gargano National Park, is one of the most interesting locations in the Foggia part of Gargano.The white landscape of Manfredonia, on the Gargano promontory,is home of some of some of the most beautiful Gargano beaches, places like Vignanotica, Mattinella and the famous "Faraglioni" (stacks) in the Zagare Bay (Baia delle Zagare). The most interesting places in Mattinata are:- The historical center:
The picturesque old town, also known as "Junno", features typical examples of dry stone buildings dating back to mid-eighteenth century. Such ancient buildings, resting one after another, were built with local limestone.
- Saracen Mount Necropolis:
The mount still preserves some ancient relics of Dauni, an old, peaceful civilization living on hunting, fishing and agriculture. The necropolis and its tombs are visible in this area.
- Villa Romana:
A few steps from the sea, actually at the entrance of the tourist harbor in Mattinata, relics of olive oil producing farms can still be seen.
Beaches in Mattinata
- Vignanotica Bay (Baia di Vignanotica):18 km from Mattinata, bound to Vieste, this pebble beach is famous for grottoes dug by the sea. This bay can only be reached on foot through a pathway.
- Mergoli Bay (Baia dei Mergoli):
Not very far from the center of Mattinata it is possible to reach one of the most charming bays in Italy, the Mergoli Bay, in the heart of the Monte Barone biogenic park. Also known as the Bay of the Stacks, between Mattinata and Vignanotica, it is one of Puglia most famous places, with its high cliffs and stacks.
