Discover Catania
Catania is the main town of one of the provinces of Sicily; it is located on the east coast of the island, at the foot of Europe's largest active volcano, Mount Etna. Catania is an interesting tourist destination for both business and leisuire travelers; thanks to the Vincenzo Bellini international airport, the city is a focus point for those who want to visit eastern Sicily's main towns including Syracuse, Ragusa, Taormina and Messina , as well as some towns along the Catania coast like Acireale and Acitrezza. The accommodation in Catania province is well developed, ranging from 5 star hotels (as the Romano Palace Luxury Hotel) to family-run hotels. The city of Catania has more than 2,700 years of history; over the centuries it had several dominations (including the Greek, Arab and Normans) that enriched the culture, the artistic and architectural heritage, and also influenced the local dialect. The city is closely tied to Etna and its eruptions; over the centuries lava had over flowed sometimes covering various settlements in the area, and people subsequently built on these. We can therefore say that Catania has different layers; in some places you can see the remains of the ancient settlements, that excavations have brought to light. For example the Roman ruins of Stesichorus Square, which is one of the central squares in Catania, that runs along its main street, called Via Etna. Other ruins dating back to Roman times are in the lower floors of the Benedictine Monastery, the largest one in Europe, built at different times in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Dating back to ancient rulers are also Achilliane baths, the Roman Theatre and the Odeon, all located in the historic centre of Catania.
Moreover the city, as well as the entire Val di Noto, was largely destroyed by an earthquake in 1693, and subsequently rebuilt: the Baroque style is in fact very present in Catania architecture (Catania and the Val di Noto were thus elected a World Heritage Site by UNESCO), as can be seen in many buildings such as the Cathedral and the Churches of Crociferi Street. At the centre of the Cathedral Square stands the symbol of Catania, the statue of the elephant known as u Liotru, while behind the square there is one of the most colourful attractions, the fish market. Other attractions are the Ursino Castle, dating from the medieval period, which today houses the Municipal Museum, the Biscari Palace, which is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, and the Teatro Massimo, dedicated to the composer Vincenzo Bellini.
If you decide to book a hotel in Catania, do not forget to taste the local specialties like arancini, cannoli, pasta alla Norma and granite. The city is characterized also for its lively nightlife: there are numerous bars, restaurants and pubs open until late where you often listen to live music. For experiencing the nightlife and admiring Catania artistic and cultural heritage, you can take advantage of various special offers and book a room at low prices.
