France is certainly one of the main tourist destinations in the world, which has always been able to attract many visitors every year.
The capital, Paris, situated in the the north east of the country, is certainly one of the most attractive places of the Country. The city is steeped in history, art and culture, and is certainly one of the most charming of the European capitals; it is divided into 20 arrondissements, each of which has its own identity and is worth a visit.
However, France is not only Paris; on the contrary, this country boasts an incredible variety of landscapes and places, each of which can in its own way enlighten you with its past history and fascinate any visitor.
The Northern Regions. To the north, France borders with Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium; we cannot avoid mentioning some regions such as Upper and Lower Normandy, Picardy and Nord-Pas de Calais.
In particular. the recent history of Normandy is linked to the famous landing of Allied troops during World War II, in June 1944; there are still many reports of the event, such as the Memorial Museum in Caen. However, this part of France is worth a visit not only for historical reasons, but also for the presence of some important cities like Rouen, Le Havre and Lille, for the magnificent landscapes and for some unique places. Among these, Mont Saint Michel is a must; it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage sites, located on an island off the coast of Lower Normandy. It is famous not only for the Benedictine Abbey of St Michel, on the top of the mountain, but also for the surrounding bay, characterized by the highest tides in Europe.
The central and northern Regions. Further to the South there is the Île-de-France, with its main city being Paris, and, further east, some regions such as Alsace, Lorraine, Champagne-Ardenne and Franche-Comté; because of the proximity of Germany, this part of France is certainly the one that feels more the influence of German culture. Among the major cities here are Strasbourg and Reims.
On the other side there are the Western regions, or Brittany and the Pays de la Loire, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and characterized by an economy mainly based on agriculture; their traditions are in part influenced by Celtic culture. Some of the cities in Brittany that are worth a visit are Brest, Saint-Malo and Rennes, while in the other region are certainly important cities like Nantes, Le Mans and Angers. This region is characterized by its spectacular castles located along the Loire river, such as the castle of Chambord and Chenonceau.
Central France. Among the central regions we find Centre-Val de Loire, Burgundy, Auvergne, Poitou-Charentes, Limousin, characterized by a rich agriculture and wine production, as well as by the beautiful castles and historic towns. The most important cities here are Clermont-Ferrand and Bourges.
The South-West. The Aquitaine and Midi-Pyrenees are the two regions in southwest France, bordering with Spain, from which are separated by the Pyrenees mountain range. These regions boast beautiful beaches overlooking the ocean and great wine productions. Do not forget that here is Bordeaux, the city that gave rise to famous quality wines. In this part of France you can discover also Toulouse, one of the most populous of cities in the country, which is also a destination of great interest to tourists.
The southern Regions. Finally, the south-eastern regions (Rhone-Alps, Languedoc-Roussillon, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and Corsica) near Italy, represent the most important tourist area in France outside of Paris, characterized by the mild climate, due to its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, the beautiful beaches and the contrasting alpine landscapes. In this area there are many places to visit, for instance the luxurious cities of the French Riviera such as Cannes or Monte Carlo, the beautiful towns of Provence such as Marseille, and many other important cities like Lyon.
France has many accomodation tourist facilities, from 5-star hotel facilities to family-run hotels, or family run Gites so you can easily find some special offers and visit the Country, in order to appreciate local traditions, food and wine, art and history.
