Exterior
Orbetello, in the center of a saltwater lagoon, stands on a thin strip of land that, artificially prolonged by Pietro di Lorena in 1842, joins the town with the promontory of Argentario. The lagoon surrounding the town is a protected habitat with natural reaches that must be preserved and saved. The lagoon's longstanding fishing activities are still very lively today and this tradition is celebrated in the month of August with an eel fair and with the so called "Palio dei barchini", a boat race dating back to 1768, preceded by a parade in historical costumes from the Spanish period. The town and its surroundings are also rich in history: the Guzman magazine is where in 1860 Garibaldi took supplies of weapons and ammunition.
