The Socialist Republic of Vietnam, is a communist country in Southeast Asia. Situated in eastern Indochina—bordering China, Laos, Cambodia, as well as the South China Sea—it is the most populous country among the mainland Southeast Asian countries. Vietnam is located on the eastern Indochina Peninsula between the latitudes 8° and 24°N, and the longitudes 102° and 110°E. During the winter or dry season, extending roughly from November to April, the monsoon winds usually blow from the northeast along the Chinese coast and across the Gulf of Tonkin, picking up considerable moisture. Temperatures vary less in the southern plains around Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta, ranging between 21 and 28 °C.
Vietnam operates 21 major civil airports, including three international gateways: Noi Bai in Hanoi, Da Nang International Airport in Da Nang, and Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City. Tan Son Nhat is the nation's largest airport. Public buses operated by private companies are the main mode of long-distance travel for much of the population. Vietnam has become a major tourist destination since the 1990s, assisted by significant state and private investment, particularly in coastal regions.
Popular tourist destinations include the former imperial capital of Hué, the World Heritage Sites of Hội An, Mỹ Sơn and Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. Also worth visiting are the caves of Hạ Long Bay and the Marble Mountains.
