Have stayed several times at this hotel and have mixed feelings about it each time. most of it is great and the position is fantastic, on the down side seem to be short staffed in restaurant with tables all around us being left uncleared at breakfast to the point people were waiting in a line to be seated for some time, no one at the bar when we waited for a drink so we left and went somewhere else, and we were given a room above the function area which had a christmas party taking place and finishing at 12.30 am playing loud thumping music. although it didn't really effect us as i was with a girlfriend catching up and chatting, it would have been annoying if trying to sleep. staff were helpful though, i just don't get why they could have not given it a bit of thought and maybe put someone from the party in that room and us somewhere else or warned us. wi-fi charge expensive when you consider you can stay in most b&b's now or visit small coffee shops and this is free of charge, parking at £8 a day bumps the bill up a bit

The southgate in exeter, though relatively new, has managed to create old world charm in its rooms, well appointed, clean, comfortable and even cosy. excellent, polite, efficient service, good english and continental breakfast with good choice.

Southgate is a quiet, convenient hotel with comfortable beds, a few blocks from the main shopping area. the tvs are hopeless and need to be replaced by something from this century, but otherwise the facilities were fine. you must pay for wifi, which increasingly feels like a bit of a gouge, rather the way hotels rip you of for a phone call. i arrived mid-day, and there was a mistake with my reservation (not obviously their fault), but they fixed it quickly, were very good about finding a room and letting me check in right away. a nice place, and a good value.
