Discover Malta
Malta, officially the Republic of Malta is an island nation in southern Europe, EU member. It is an archipelago located in the Mediterranean, in the Malta Channel, 80 km from Sicily and 284 km to from Tunisia and 333 km Libya, including in the Italian physical region. Covering 316 square kilometers, is one of the smallest and most densely populated state in the world. Its capital is Valletta and Birkirkara is the most inhabited city.Valletta is a medieval city founded by the Knights of Malta, or Knights Hospitallers in 1566, is home to attractions of great value as the Grandmaster's Palace built in the XVI century is the current seat of the Maltese Parliament, which was once the Holy Infirmary of the hospital Knights of Malta today has been transformed into a functional congress center and the St James Centre for Creativity an old building renovated to house a museum of contemporary art. Walking around town you can visit the Cathedral of St. John a church of the XIV century in Baroque style that was owned by the Knights Hospitaller knights buried there died in the battles of the Crusades, the Republic Square, Casa Rocca Piccola a wonderful museum reproducing the daily life and habits of the Maltese nobility over the past 400 years, the National Archaeological Museum which houses artifacts of early settlements on the island, the Museum of Fine Arts, which covers the period from the Renaissance to modern times and the Toy Museum ideal to bring children. For shopping the streets of Valletta are ideal and in particular the Merchant's Street decorated with important Baroque palaces, the typical products of the maltese handcraft that you should buy in the shops of this road are: wicker baskets, knitting wool, hand-embroidered lace, filigree jewelry in gold or silver, Maltese clocks and ceramics and glassware created by local artisans. If it's a beautiful day you can go to the gardens Barraka that will offer a wonderful view of the harbor city.
Archaeological Malta. Malta has archaeological sites declared by UNESCO a World Heritage such as the megalithic Ggantija in Xaghra, Gozo Island (small island nearby), represent one of the most important sites in the world and date back to 3600-3200 BC, they are formed by a complex of temples built with blocks of limestone, the sanctuary called Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni dating back to the period between 3600-2400 BC and it is an underground complex carved into the rock used as a burial place and shrine and other megalithic structures of Ta 'Hagrat, Hagar Qim, Mnajdra, and the temples of Tarxien Skorba famous for their carvings in limestone depicting spiral motifs and animals.
Mdina and Rabat. Another town to visit Mdina may be, a small village in the hinterland of Malta, its main attractions are: the Cathedral of St. Paul was built in Norman style to commemorate the the ship wreck of the saint on the coast of Malta, inside has a beautiful paved floor set with the tombs of the aristocracy of the island and an interesting museum, the buildings of Norman times, the dungeons of the city that you can visit with a special tour of the city and the fortified walls. Rabat is another town worth visiting, offers its visitors the Museum of Roman Antiquities or "Villa Romana" and various catacombs. The museum contains an extensive collection of artifacts and mosaics dating greek-Roman. The catacombs open to the public are those of St. Paul and St. Agatha.
Beaches. The island's best beaches are Paradise Bay, which lies north-west end and is characterized by an extensive reef, with a creek where it enshrines the small sandy beach instead, the beach Gneijna offers turquoise sea and golden sand, Anchor Bay is famous for being the film set of Popeye, the Golden Bay has beautiful blue waters and sandy beach equipped with umbrellas and sunbeds, the Melliha Bay a long sandy beach in the north of the island is equipped with a bar and kiosks and the Saint George Bay a small rocky bay with large rocks for sunbathing and where to dive for a swim.
