Excellent location in cologne

I spent two very comfortable nights in this elegant hotel which is located about as close to the main train station as it is possible to be. the excelsior is an older hotel and standard rooms are somewhat small, but comfortable and spotlessly maintained. my only complaint is a minor one: the television offerings are rather slim and the remote was ancient, the movies for purchase function didn't seem to work and so selection was limited. but this was probably a blessing in disguise as i really needed to be up early the next days and had no time for television in any event. also, when in cologne there are much better things to do than watch tv!

the staff here are outstanding -- friendly, helpful and always cheerful it seems. made for a very pleasant stay.

Family break to cologne

Lovely friendly hotel with 5 star quality. all the staff went out of their way to be helpful but not imposing. the breakfast provided everything you could wish for with a help yourself buffet and a chef for freshly cooked items. the bar man in the piano bar was very efficient and accommodating. the reception staff were welcoming and informative. the hotel was just opposite the cathedral and a short walk from the train station so made an excellent base to explore this city.

Excellent possition

I am now disappointed that i accepted the room. it was spotless but not 5 star. the room was tired and old fashioned. (room 311)i do advise anyone staying at this hotel to refuse to stay in a a room that is not what they would expect of a 5 star hotel.
