An island retreat- great in principle.

We were looking forward to staying on rebak island and the thought of an island retreat was what drew us to this hotel. seen as though this was our honeymoon and one of the stops along the way we were very much looking forward to our stay. before arriving, we looked at several reviews and we were quite alarmed with the feedback. many people were disappointed with their stay. despite this we wanted to go with fresh eyes and no prejudgments. fantastic pickup service from the airport, impressed with the staff at the jetty too. took care of our luggage (both on the way there and ten way back). our stay at the hotel was far from what was expected, seen as though this is a 4 star hotel. lovely room, but that's where it ends unfortunately. the television didn't work, the air conditioning leaked on both nights. this is after we complained and told it was fixed and numerous mosquitoes in the room. my husband was bitten 8 times in one night. to add insult to injury we received a 5:30am wake up call, which of course we didn't ask for. we were only staying in langkawi for 2 nights! in all fairness the television was fixed (air con unit not fixed) and the duty manager did offer his apologies and asked what he could do to make things better. we mentioned we are at the restaurant the night before and perhaps it could be taken off our room bill. he assured us he will and i quote, 'sort this'. talking of the food, it is very expensive. you are looking to pay on average £20 for a small meal and the buffet for the evening costs £45 with drinks (based on two people). which to me is a lot of money. unfortunately, the last boat from the mainland back to the island is 7:45 so it does restrict you. the boat service was fantastic, but the timings are very restricting. back to the outcome of our 5:30 wake up call. we were told it was a mistake made by another guest who gave the wrong room number. if that was the case, the staff should have cross checked with the name and asked the person who gave the room number. any errors could have been rectified there and then. as we were checking out, we were given our bill. with the meal still on there. i was then told by the same manager i spoke to the day before that i would only receive 20% discount. this was never mentioned in our conversation. as you can imagine, we were not happy. finally, it was taken off the room, yet with no apology. i was with the staff overall. the odd one seemed to really care about our experience, but most were uninterested and unhelpful. this island retreat could be fantastic, it really has all the ingredients to be a 5 star resort. unfortunately there is a lot (from our experience) missing and we were very disappointed with our stay.
