The Gulf of Maracaibo was first explored by Europeans in 1499, when they arrived Alonso de Ojeda and Amerigo Vespucci. The Lake Maracaibo is the largest in South America and has a channel through it which connects directly with the Caribbean Sea. Maracaibo is one of the hottest cities of Venezuela with many special offers all year round, the city has a tropical and semi-arid climate.

The Airport (La Chinita) is in the immediate vicinity of the city and has flights to the rest of the country and also with other countries such as Colombia, Panama and the United States, the airport is in second place among the country's air terminals.
