Great staff carrying a dated hotel

The staff here are great, however they are let down by the hotel and it’s general upkeep. we checked in and were given a room with a ocean view, however when we got to the room, we could hear every word the room next door through the wall and connecting door. they weren’t being loud, and at one point we could hear them emptying their pockets of change. the balconies were separated using an ill fitting, material divider which offers no privacy due to the large gaps at the sides, so we decided to go back to reception and try and move rooms. we were willing to pay extra for any room that didn’t have an ajoining door, which the receptionist said was fine and gave us a new room at no extra cost. having arrived at the new room, it did have a connecting door to the room next door, but the room was empty. after 11hrs traveling, we just decided we couldn’t be bothered to argue any more and decided to stay there as we were only there for 3 nights. however having paid the money we did for staying here, we were both shocked at how dated and run down parts of the hotel were (the lobby and the gardens are as good as it gets). the rooms and corridors have scuff marks all over the walls, the doors were chipped and damaged, the stair wells to the rooms look like something from a multi storey car park and the guttering has rusted and split in several places. this may have been the standard 20-30 years ago, however the standards have been raised and this hotel hasn’t adapted. we overheard other guests talking about this, some agreed with our points, where as some others said they were willing to sacrifice the room quality for the beach and pool. we didn’t understand this, as the pool was the same as any other decent hotel pool, the beach is man made so is bound to be nice, but you can’t get in the sea easily due to the rocks. the gardens are nice, but then again you are in they keys so how hard can it be to make them look inviting. for the money they charge, you would want all of it to be of a high standard. after watching people for 3 days, we realised those that were happy with the facilities were the same guests who stayed around the hotel all day and ate their at night, therefore not seeing what other places were offering. we didn’t eat at the hotel so couldn’t comment on the quality, we just looked at the prices and why people were eating, and compared it to those nearby and found them to again be overpriced compared to the quality on offer elsewhere. before booking here, please look at the other hotels on the island, they seem to have raised their game, where as this place is living off its name and historical reputation. would not recommend to anyone.
