Discover Mahdia

Mahdia is one of the most important cities of Tunis, near Ain Draham, Djerba, Hammamet, Kairouan and Tunis, the capital. Mahdia is located in the eastern part of the North African state, overlooking the Gulf of Hammamet.

Historical artifacts found suggest that the city played an important role in the first century BC in the basin of the Mediterranean. Phoenicians, Romans and Greeks passed through here. In the first century AD The caliph Ubayd Allah al-Mahdi founded the modern city it is named.

The cultural attractions are the palace of Prince al-Qa'im bi-Amr Allah, the residence of the caliph and the Grand Mosque, two arsenals and an imposing wall with bastions of earth and sea, which seemed to be the port where the efficient fleet with which the Fatimid caliphs kept in check the Mediterranean coast. Attractiveness of the peninsula, where the headquarters of the old city, are the sea and the suk, the traditional market.

The city is located 60 minutes from the international airport of Monastir-Habib Bourguiba connected with Italy, France, Britain and other European countries.
