Shame about the room!

The hotel reception was great. very, very disappointed in the room on 'm' floor though. although the sheets and bathroom were clean, there was cobwebs all over the room. outside the window was a tree, so no view whatsoever. the window frames were rotten throughout, filthy and again had cobwebs all over. staff were really nice and friendly, bar area was good and breakfast in the morning was very good. all in all, i don't think i would stay again as the room really put me off.

Theatre break

All staff were friendly and helpful.we were seeing a show at 2.30pm at the nearby theatre and asked if we could check in early - which we did at no extra cost.our room was spacious and clean. breakfast was a buffet style cooked and continental items- staff were friendly and attentive. the only downside to our stay was that another couple was later allocoted the same room and got a surprise that we were already in the room.

Over night stay!

I booked this for my wife and my self as a birthday treat, it is excellently positioned for oxford road railway station so we got the train instead of driving. the hotel was very welcoming, the room was nice, with a massive window and high ceiling we liked it, we had dinner before going out, the food was good and reasonably priced. we later had a drink when we came back in the great looking bar area, drinks were usual hotel prices, bar staff were friendly. overall we had a nice stay but my only complaint would be the noise from outside, trains etc.

Dirty dirty dirty

Check in was very pleasant and i was told i had a great room (m10)- what a big lie!! the room was small, and black dust blown from the airconditioning was all on the ceiling.large black cobwebs from the table lamp to the ceiling and dangling from the central light. balls of black dust and dirt in the corner. basically the room looked like it hadn't been cleaned for months rather than days. i refused to stay in it and was moved (with no problem)to room 4202 - much nicer room and much cleaner but still black dust and cobwebs on the central light.

Beautiful hotel

I stayed in this hotel 14/09/13 for 1 night. my room was in the basement, it had two double beds, beautiful original tiles on the walls and original features and a large bathroom with power shower over the bath tub. the room was clean and large. the mattress was quite uncomfortable and was probably due to be replaced and the tv only had 5 channels, aside from this the room was beautiful. a pint of large/ beer at the bar is about £1.50 more expensive than an average pub, but the bar area is very pleasant. we ate at the restaurant at both breakfast and dinner and the food was amazing and one of the best meals i have had and excellent value for money. over all a very nice hotel and i will stay here again.

The check in was efficient and friendly.we had 2 rooms booked and both were clean and of a good standard.an added bonus is that the palace theatre is literally across the road from the hotel.drinks in the bar were a bit on the expensive side but once again the staff were very friendly.an english breakfast was enjoyed by all the party and tea and coffee was replenished as soon as your cup was empty.absolutely no complaints about our stay at the palace and roll on next year for our next theatre outing

Room 157 extremely cold and very noisey

A friend and i booked one night in the palace as we were going to see the lion king at the neaby palace theatre. as my friend didnt like using lifts the receptionist, very kindly, found us a room on the first floor. we were allocated room 157. we found the room to be clean and spacious with two king size beds. however, because the room was so large(it had a ceiling height of at least 20 ft)it did seem rather cold. we were also extremely close to the oxford road railyway line.trains were passing within a few feet of our windows several times an hour. we turned the thermostat up before leaving to have a pre theatre meal at the hotel . we found the meal to be of a very good standard but noted the drinks were rather expensive. service was rather slow - it took nearly 2 hours to have a 3 course meal and we needed to prompt the waitresses a few times so that we got to the theatre on time.

The palace

We were pleasantly surprised when we got to our room and saw that we had been allocated a very large room/suite! we have stayed at the palace before as we found the location to be really convenient and we thoroughly enjoyed our second stay this time. the only thing that let it down was the breakfast. the coffee was tasteless, the "hot" breakfast had clearly been sitting there for some time. the scrambled egg was sitting in water and there was hair in the beans. it was unappetising and it seemed unacceptable to all 9 people waiting in line that we were expected to wait for almost 10 minutes for some eggs to be cooked! when they finally arrived, all our other food/toast was stone cold and the eggs were slopped into a dish that still had the previous cold, congealed oil in it. on our second morning we ended up going to mcdonalds for breakfast as that seemed more appealing! despite the breakfast being unpleasant, the rest of our stay and the hotel was really good. the building is huge and quirky with a mixture of new and old decor. it is clean, well located for the train station, shops, bars and restaurants and the staff were very friendly and helpful. i would definitely stay here again - just wouldn’t pay to have the breakfast. i would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a nice room, in a great location for a reasonable price.

All going downhill......

We have been using the palace since 2007(son at college in manchester)and were really disappointed this time round. whilst the staff were as accomodating as ever there was a distinct air of doing things 'on the cheap'. our room, whilst spotlessly clean was really tired looking _rucked up carpet, handles missing on the drawers, power points not working and the bathroom in desperate need of a makeover_sink cracked, grouting and bath seal discoloured through age. complimentary toiletries have now been reduced to one shower gel and one body lotion _no shower cap despite the fact that the shower head is at a fixed height.tea and coffee facilities constituted one teabag each, one coffee sachet each_ bit stingey!! palace reamins the only 4 star i have stayed at in last 18 months to have no minibar or in-room fridge. breakfast a disappointment too _used to be great. weak tea is now dispensed from flasks (give us a pot for heaven's sake!!) and a waiter floats round with a tray full of toast until the tray is empty-regardless of how cold the toast gets just all felt a bit uncared for and tired...definitely more of a 3 star till they refurbish rooms etc.

Palace of contrasts

Very pleased to get one night here at a very good rate. have stayed once before (regular visitor to manchester) but would only book again if the price was right. room was fine, only a double bed, not a king, but nicely decorated. bathroom however was shabby and needs an upgrade. most disapointing however was breakfast - all the hot stuff dry and tired looking, industrial grade sausage, sad eggs, limp bacon and no interesting extras - mushroom, black pudding - that you might expect with four stars over the door. ok for the price (£700 not worth any more.

Shabby, noisy....but cheap!

We arrived earlyish and were told that our room wasn't ready. in such a big hotel, it seemed crazy that there wasn't any room available, but the receptionist said that if we waited and came back later, we'd be sure of a quiet, more pleasant room. in fact, our room was right over a function room with unbelievably loud music. it took three phone calls to reception (and three downright lies from the desk about what they were doing about it) before we were allowed to change rooms. we had to get out of bed, get dressed and collect all our things at around midnight! the room we were given was clearly one of the hotels best rooms - and it was much, much smarter and bigger. however, even here there were odd bits of peeling paint. we paid £68 for a double room and breakfast, so i do still think this was our best choice for one night. however, i wouldn't go here if there were an alternative you could afford. it's a fascinating building with amazing architecture - the price you pay is that it's a little shabby and inelegant (photocopied bluetacked notices on doors, bathrooms in need of a revamp etc).

Palace hotel - manchester

Booked for overnight stay following visit to palace theatre. excellent location (just accross the road).we have stayed here before and have been most satisfied. only drawback is that if you have problems with walking then dependant on which part of the hotel you are in you would have steps from the reception area to the restaurant. this can be avoided but only by actually going outside the hotel turning right and walking accross the front to enter by the door opposite the theatre where there are only 2 small steps to negotiate. the hotel was kind enough to allocate a room on the restaurant side although these are mostly the upgraded and family rooms they managed to find us an alternate room.

Could have been better

We have stayed at the palace before, booking at full price. through hotelclick it was much cheaper, £75.50 compared to £109.00. the room the palace allocated us at the full price was upgraded and was large, traditional, updated and special. the bargain room they allocated was up in the eaves, well out of the way on the top floor and off the main rooms, very small, poorly serviced and had not been brought up to date in many a year. very dissapointing. i would rather pay more for a decent sized room, with the touch of glamour we expected from this botique hotel or pay less and stay somewhere else, like the holiday inn which is basically modern, clean, equipped and cheaper. breakfast was gorgeous, buffet style, with lots of choice from continental to traditional.

Not our first stay at the palace, likely to be our last though.

We have stayed at the palace on a few occasions and have always completed the customer satisfaction cards in the room. always, we have suggested that the service in the bar is not up to scratch, there was no difference this time in the service, or in our eyes lack of service. the room was dusty and the sheets were suspiciously not as crisp as they should be. the reason for our stay was the architecture in the hotel, we promised our daughter a stay there as she is a student photographer and appreciates such things. there was no room service menu in the room, as we were on a tight schedule, we ate out instead of waiting for a- a new room service menu, then b- our order to arrive. the triple room we booked was smaller than the double rooms we have stayed in on other stays, which was a shame. when we got up in plenty of time for breakfast, i found that the shower was faulty, then we all played cat and mouse with the far too hot shower and raced down to breakfast. we were shown to a table only to have the maitre d' be hissed at by a colleague that we couldn't have that table and were politely requested to wait in the lounge for a table to be found. breakfast was fine, mostly hot and plenty to choose from. in all fairness the service in the breakfast room and in reception were fine too. after breakfast, my husband reported the faulty shower and a plumber promptly came and fixed this problem, but with checkout being so close, it was a rush to get showered (again) and packed.

A nght at the palace

The foyer and vast scale of the building dwarfs and almost intimidates the visitor. we've stayed here before liking its central position and the fact there is a good 24 hour secure car park round the cornerwhere guests get discount. check in was smooth and the staff friendly and efficient. the sheer scale of the hotel with its vast high ceilings, acres of terracotta and green tiling and the warren of corridors is a bit daunting. it does have a lot of character retaining the vaulted ceilings, wood panelling and many of the features of the former insurance building. our room was not one of the best - a bit frayed and the decor rather gloomy and quite small for a double. it appeared to have been carved out of a section of office and was in need of refurbishment. the holded curtains and view of the railway lines did nothing to enliven it. the corridor and landing leading to it had evidently had new carpet laid but no one had hoovered any of the bits and debris up. however the bathroom was good, the shower very efficient and all the usual facilities inlcuding an iron and board (nice touch). the bed was comfortable but generally the room didn't really reflect its 4 star status. the tempus bar and barman is good although the prices will keep you sober. as everything seemed to cost £7.50 cocktails seemed rather better value than my glass of rioja. a good buffet breakfast with options such as kippers cooked to order was included. the palace can't really compete on style or fittings with some of the newer hotels but its staff are friendly and efficient, rooms relatively comfortable and with its central location it makes a good choice for theatre and concert stopovers. generally its comfortable. given what we paid it was good value as it included the breakfast. if we'd been charged the full £100 a night price, it would be differfent matter.

It's a palace!...until you get to your room

The palace lives up to it's name as you enter it's grand hall and go to the reception, it's a this point onwards that your awe is taken down a peg. the receptionists are not as welcoming as you'd home and you almost get the feeling you're an inconvenience (and if you've booked online, it's here that they tell you there is a parking discount available through the palace - shame you've already paid and displayed). the bathrooms in the rooms are perfect, some rooms are nice but others define the word - basic. also, if you're unlucky with the room, you get to look out the window at some skips, rubbish and back-alleys. the restaurant and bar is exquisite but the cost of the luxurious surrounding is included in the price of the drinks. lovely hotel, it clearly wants to attract the highest client but it needs to remember that the quality has to be throughout the hotel - not just in parts. though if it wants to attract families then the prices will have to drop.

Overall a great hotel but the hotel staff let it down. very slow at check-in, not helpful with heavy baggage, not very great with any complaints and there were a few about rooms near the trainline. had they said the trains dont run at night - problem solved - they didn't seem to know this.

Excellent night

The palace is a great centrally located hotel right in the heart of all the action. its external looks are unusual but once you enter the reception the wow factor hits you. the bar and restaurant are modern, fresh and welcoming. the staff were brilliant - really helpful & knowledgable. we've stayed in places that cost twice as much as we paid here and got half the service, welcome and experience.

Nice, but some bad service

Nice hotel with pleasant rooms however, it took us three attempts to get a wine cooler and in the end we had to go get it ourselves and it still wasn't ready, they gave us a vase full of ice in the end! the breakfast was also not replenished often enough

Weekend stay 6/1/2008

We have used this hotel several times now as our son started at a college located directly opposite in september 2007. each time we have stayed (3 visits to date), the rooms have been excellent for size and comfort- the one thing on our wish list would be a mini bar-unusual for a 4* hotel room not to have one. have usaed the restaurant for dinner-not cheap but very good and the breakfasts offer a very good choice. all staff are friendly and helpful and wouldn't hesitate to reccomend it to other people.

Bargain stay at the palace

A great offer, which included breakfast. the breakfast was excellent and the room was very comfortable. i've stayed in hotels all over the world and this hotel competes with the best of them. staff were very friendly and accomodating. the draw backs were the long trek to the bedroom and the lack of leisure facilities like a pool/ fitness room.

Great hotel, shame about the bar!

Having stayed at the palace a while ago, during refurb, i knew what an amazing hotel this is. the reception staff and staff at breakfast were all amazing, my only reservation, was the staff in the hotel bar - they were not well trained and it was impossible to catch their eye.... this was my only complaint. the rooms are huge as are the beds - bathroom lovely with lots of complimentary things in there. the breakfast was actually far better than expected and staff were attentive without being in your way. i will stay again, but may not use the bar next time.... am happy to pay inflated prices if you get service to match, this was not our experience on this occasion.

Good and bad!

First impressions of this hotel are great, the public areas are very contemporary - lovely to be in. we booked a pre-theatre dinner which was exellent. the bedroom were disappointing. i was travelling with two friends, two had a twin and i had a single, it was quite clear to us that, these rooms were inferior. whilst the features such as the original 12ft windows were nice, they are clearly hard to dress. my bathroom window had curtains but no blinds or frosting so it was a great view for anyone over in the otherside of the hotel walking along the corridor!! one more niggle is the lack of "silent closing" doors -this did actually cause a complaint to the management as we were all disturbed throughout the night and first thing next morning with people going through them, the musical squeak bang bang wears off after a while!!

Palace hotel - great!

Having booked this hotel, i came across another review website and was so worried because of all the bad write ups about the palace hotel in manchester! most of the reviews about this place were very, very poor. as the time neared for our stay, i became increasingly worried! i rang up twice before i went to try and ensure i didn't get one of those dreaded basement rooms that have been so graphically described by previous visitors. both times i was told the rooms were allocated on arrival so they couldn't tell me where i would be. when we arrived in the very grande looking reception, i agreed with how luxurious it appeared, thinking it would all go downhill from there. when we were being allocated the rooms, i told the nice receptionist that i did not want to be in the basement rooms as i had read the horrendous reviews. my friends and i were then given two rooms on the fourth floor. up we toddled with me hoping it wouldn't be too bad. when we opened the doors to our rooms, we were floored! they were huge and beautiful! we were in rooms 405 and 409. you could have fitted loads of people in them! the bathrooms off the bedrooms were also large, well equipped and spotlessly clean. i felt so sorry for all the people who had stayed in the basement rooms as these two rooms were definately 4* without a doubt. we rang reception and asked for a few things whilst we were there. this included a bottle opener, one of those things you always forget!! within minutes, a happy chap arrived at our door to do the honours with a bottle opener. all staff throughout our stay were friendly and pleasant. the breakfast was brilliant without a doubt. i strongly suggest people mention what they have read about this hotel when they arrive so they will hopefully have the same experience my friends and i had. i would strongly advise the hotel to close these basement rooms off and get them refurbished before they receive any more horrendous reviews on sites like this. if i had been looking at the reviews on here before i had booked a hotel, i certainly wouldn't have chosen this one and what a great experience i would have missed out on. 10 out of 10 for me

Wedding weekend

We booked the palace simply because cheaper options were fully booked. first impressions were good, staff friendly and welcoming. the room was small but very clean so we weren 't bothered. the only thing that spoilt it was that it was warm, and not one window would open and we did not have air con. the telephone didn't work so my husband made trips to reception to inform them. house keeping brought us a fan which was not a brilliant substitute for fresh air but the phone was never repaired. overall the stay was pleasent and we had a great weekend with our friends all of whom had far larger rooms than we did. hey-ho.

Excellent place to stay in manchester

Wow! what an impressive foyer. the room was lovely - the only negative thing i could think of was that the beds could have done with a valance as the bases were not exactly clean looking (scuffed etc however everything else was very clean so i wasn't unduly bothered). it would have been a perfect stay if it wasn't for the noise from a private party that was going on, however, as my husband slept throughout the noise without any problem, maybe i was just suffering from strange bed syndrome and therefore more aware of extra noises.

After reading the reviews on the internet about this hotel. we were pleasantly surprised, to say the least. the reception staff were very friendly and polite. the porter imediately appeared from nowhere and took charge of all our baggage. he and handled our evening clothes carefully. the room was small but adequately furnished and absolutely spotless, bedding and towels were as white and clean as any top class hotel. the bathroom was also spotless. the only fault was the room was so hot. i rang and ordered a fan, it was delivered to the room in under ten minutes. by a friendly housekeeper who showed us that the windows opened sideways !!! so all was well.

Palace indeed!

I booked the palace hotel overnight as a birthday gift for my husband. we were there to see peter kay on his last night in "the producers". checking in was quick and the conceirge directed my husband to the parking area that is also discounted by the hotel. when we opened the door to the room, the shear size of the room was mind blowing (considering it was a standard double)! it was more like a suite! room was clean but a little outdated as this was not one of the rooms that had been refurbished. still, it was lovely and the beds were soooooooo comfy! after the show we went to weatherspoons just around the corner for a few drinks and then to the hotel's tempest bar. service was excellent and the atmosphere was great for winding down at the end of the night. drink prices were also reasonable for a hotel. the full breakfast included was lovely and fresh. everything you can imagine from a full english to fresh fruit, cheeses, pastries etc. serivce was 5 star. my husband and i would definitely stay there again (even if we were going to an event on the other side of town, we'd take the train back)!

Hotel nice, staff incompetent

The hotel was beautiful, when we first booked in we went to our basement room which was no smoking, we telephoned reception who asked us to return to reception to be allocated another room. we were then told that we were allocated another room on the 4th floor but the occupant was still in the room being moved out by the conceiarge as he wanted a non smoking room. we went into the bar with our luggage where we waited for 20 minutes to be served my husband went to the bar and was told someone would be over to take our order, the order was taken our drinks were made and taken to another table the waitress was told by the other table that they were not their drinks the drinks were returned to the bar, we waited another 5 minutes when my husband went to the bar and asked if they were our drinks the bar tender replied what did you order, my husband told the bar tender what we had ordered his replied was yes they must be yours. after our drink we decided to go up to our room as about an hour had passed. after going to the 3rd floor in the lift, walking up a very long corridor and taking another lift to the 4th floor we finally found our room. my husband put the key card in and was greeted by a man in the bath, the man obviously hadn't moved rooms. we went back down in the lift along the corridor into the other lift to walk back through the bar down 2 sets of stairs to report back to the reception to tell them that the 2nd room they had allocated to us still had the occupant in it, we were then given another key card for another room which when we got into the room it was huge with 2 double beds in and the bathroom had double sinks in, the room was great but after spending 2 nights in it the heating was constantly on even when we put the dial to zero we also had the air conditioning on full blast and a fan to try and cool us down. when we first got into the room my husband went to turn the tv over only to find that we only had 1 battery in the remote when we enquired at reception we were told it would be replaced straight away, on the 2nd evening we had to go back to reception and eventually received a battery for the remote. when we got into the room we also had to request an ash tray as there wasn't one in the room, we received that also on the 2nd day after reqesting it again from reception. on the 2nd evening we went into the bar to see what was being served for dinner we were quite shocked to find that it was the same as what we had the night before, we went back to our room and had room service which was excellent. we then went back to the bar to wait another 20 minutes for a drink while the staff stood at the bar and chatted, after not being able to get anyones attention, i went down to reception to complain about the service, the receptionist then rung the bar manager who proceeded to huff and puff and my husband replied thats my wife your huffing and puffing at, the bar manager then asked me what the problem was and when i told him that we were sat waiting to be served for 20 minutes and it wasn't the first time he just nodded, no appologie or anything, he sent someone to take our order which we still waited 10 minutes for. overall impression of the hotel is beautiful hotel incompetent staff.

The first room we had was noisey and had paint flaking off the ceiling, the second room though tastfully decorated was small, the third room needed decoratating. we were moved on the saturday night because of trouble in the next room and housekeeping failed to turn up on sunday. the towels in this room were worn and threadbare. the menu did not change for the 3 nights we were there and the tables for 2 felt cramped. we were over charged twice in the restaurant, we pointed it out the first time and it was rectified we didn't bother the second time. if this had been a 4star hotel we would have been pleased with the price.

The palace hotel - with palacial prices!

The hotel is situated within less than a minutes walk from the palace theatre, which is ideal if you are enjoying a theatre break. the hotel is a very large, grand hotel which has an extremely impressive entrance lobby with a high, stained glass ceiling and architectural stone work. the rooms however, are not so grand (in size) and if you like a bit of fresh air, make sure you request a room with a window that opens - as we were put in a room on the lower ground floor - without an opening window! whilst very clean and smart - with a modern bathroom - it may have been a bit of a problem if a fire was to start on our particluar corridor as there was absolutely no escape!!! the hotel has a restaurant which appeared extremely posh! - but we did not have time to eat there - we did, however, return to the hotel bar for a "night cap" but be aware of the scandalous prices !!! a pint of hoegarden beer and a glass of baileys with ice - cost £12.50 !!!! £12.50 !!! this hotel is in a great location for the theatre and is extremely comfortable, but make sure you get a room on a higher floor - and you avoid the bar! there are lots of good restaurants and surrounding bars - there is an italian - don giovannis - which serves absolutely amazing food - which is a couple of hundred yards down oxford road, where a meal for two with drinks cost us £34(on the opposite side of the hotel towards the town hall). this is well worth a visit!

A beautiful hotel, retaining many original features, setting it apart from the usual, mundane, "all the same" hotels. we had two twin rooms for our party and each was individual and comfortable. the staff were friendly and very helpful. the only negative comment i can think of is that the bar prices were extortionate, but probably the going rate for hotel bars. if you want a few drinks i would recommend walking a little way to find a bar in the city centre.
