The staffs were nice and helpful, but the location is a bit far from the city centre, had to take taxi to go to bullring, cost 5 quid. room was ok. only 1 night so so far i'm satisfy with this hotel.

Seen better days

Impressive history (see http://www.theparagonhotel.co.uk/history) but not much to praise it for these days. the small single room would have been adequate but for the completely cold shower water (which was a sharp wake up call on a february sunday morning), and for the fact that budget hotels seem to attract parties of people who return to the hotel loud, argumentative and drunk, on the hour every hour of the night. the hotel's location was a dark and derelict part of the city, and i had difficulty parking my car because of empty glass beer bottles left in the gutter. consequently i selected to eat in the restaurant rather than venture out alone, only to find that the restaurant had closed at 6pm because of lack of advance orders.

Historic gothic hotel, a bit shabby chic!

Friendly helpful staff, old hotel with character but a bit noisy, and could do with a new mattress in our room. good choices for breakfast.

Basic but good

Don't let the website's glossy pictures fool you - the single rooms look nothing like the revamped room that is featured. there's barely room to swing a cat and the diy leaves a lot to be desired. however, for the price and for the sake of stopping one night, all in all i would recommend to colleagues. i paid a bargain price of £35 and would not pay the standard price of £85 for the room allocated me. the front of house and bar staff were wonderful and the food was gorgeous!

The room very small for calling itself double and for the price , the seeling was seriously cracked , the windows needed paint and the carpet...better not to mention but the room service was good. breakfast - very unimaginative .location - bad for single traveller . hotel surrounded by industrial and not very nice residential area so if without a car , lonely walk at evening around hotel not adviced. i have chosen it accidentally because of attending convention in the town .

Not the biggest room in the world but perfectly comfortable. luxurious feel to the public areas. 10 minutes walk from the bullring and plenty of street parking if you don't want to fork out for the hotel carpark. at £55 for two, including an excellent "all you can eat" breakfast, you can't beat it!

Paragon, birmingham

Generally a very good hotel, and very reasonably priced. the room was a bit tired looking and could do with being refurbished, especially the shower. however, it was clean and comfortable, and there is a quite impressive view across central birmingham from the window. the location may not be to everyone's taste - the hotel is set among warehouses and drearyl industrial units – but it is convenient for the city centre, theatres, railway stations, etc., which are no more than ten minutes' walk away.

Gloomy and uninspiring...

Gloomy and uninspiring, this hotel is in urgent need of an overhaul. alhough most of the common parts are acceptable, the bedrooms we used were sadly lacking when compared to other similarly priced venues. decor very poor in the rooms,(bordering on grubby and shabby); rumbling plumbing and limited supplies of hot water. we will not be returning in the forseeable future.

Not a bad place to stay!

On entering the hotel, it has a very nice feel. the receptionist was friendly and informative. the hotel itself looks clean and attractive and overall my stay was quite enjoyable. the only downside is the fact that the car park is over the road and i found it a bit awkward carrying my bags across the road(and also that the price of parking is not included in the price of the room). also despite the fact that there were no smoking signs in the room, my room smelt very strongly of cigarettes as soon as i walked in, which was slightly off putting.

Great stay - definitely recommended, but some caveats

Good value hotel, appears to be set up mainly for conferences and events. we had a small twin room on the first floor - recently refurbished (or at least redecorated) to a reasonable standard, but very small. definitely worth asking for a superior room, i understand that not all of the rooms have been refurbished at present (sept-07).

Very average hotel. reception and frontage looks impressive, but once within this facade the hotel reveals itself as a very poorly run establishment. the receptionists were abrupt and ill informed about the hotel services and were often misleading. the rooms were small and very dated. the facilities were of a poor standard. the breakfast buffet was cold and of poor variety. i was visiting because i was attending a wedding nearby, however i have no intention of staying again.

Paragon hotel review may 07

Arrived at the hotel wednesday evening. there was a queue of about 8 people in front of me, probably not surprising as there was only one member of staff at the front desk. i was dealt with in a friendly and efficient manner. lots of refurb work meant that things were a bit of a mess. on the second night of my stay i had to wait well over an hour for my dinner to arrive... the bedroom walls appear to be wafer thin, had i wanted i could have had a conversation with the people next door without even needing to raise my voice! also the double doors outside my bedroom made a hell of a racket all night. oh, and there was no shower, just a bath - not very eco friendly!

Snowy welcome

We were unfortunate enough to book a snowy weekend for our staty in paragon but despite staff shortages because of adverse weather conditions we were given royal treatment and nothing was too much trouble-even cooking foor off the menu despite the head chef not being able to get into work! room was small but clean and tidy and good enough for a one night stay. i believe renovations are under way to improve this. i only hope the staff dont change and the level of personal service remains a1. i wont hesitate to stay there again.
