Convenient for a short break

My wife and i chose this hotel partly on location and partly on price. it's only a kilometre from the eurostar station at gare du nord and is easily walked if it's dry (it was and we did.). it's also close enough to many sights such as the louvre, opera garnier, sacre coeur, arc de triomphe, notre dame either on foot or by metro. the room cost us £272 for three nights b&b at the end of march 2011; it was booked in january. the room was called a 'superior double room' with a double bed (or rather two singles pushed together) and had good washing facilities. the beds were very clean and comfortable, towels were changed regularly. the room was however very hot - day and night - and as we didn't manage to suss out the air-conditioning we had to keep both the windows open at night to stay cool. there was no view out of our windows anyway as they only looked out onto to other people's windows. (we were on the first floor.) the tv was a good set, but didn't have any english-speaking stations on it. (aucun signal.) there were 8 french and one russian (!)stations available. the tv schedule in the room said that both bbc world and cnn were available - they weren't. the receptionist agreed that this was the case, but that was how it was, he said. there was a bath/shower with plenty of hot water and a hair-drier. there were no mini-bar, safe or tea & coffee making facilities in the room. our room was not noisy. the breakfast on the ground floor was very good. plenty of cereal, tea/coffee, rolls, pain au chocolat, meat slices, cheese, jams, etc. this area of paris (9th arrondissemnet) is a place where people work (lots of apartments, offices, restaurants and shops), and we always felt safe there. rather surprisingly we found that there were few typically french restaurants in the area; plenty of japanese, chinese, yiddish, lebanese, italian (lots of pizza places), turkish etc. considering what we paid for our three nights b&b it was reasonable value - plenty of hotels charge a lot more. i'm sure that the things we didn't like (the heat in the room and the tv stations could easily be addressed by the hotel. overall we enjoyed our stay at the peyris (with the above reservations) and in paris itself.

Ok but...

Very expensive for what we got, but we soon realised that was par for the course for everything in paris. hotel was clean but pretty basic. we had to complain on arrival because our first room was not acceptable as it was too small and the toilet was in a tiny cubby-hole. the second room was only slightly better. this was on the top floor which caused the hot water to be erratic.
