Beware room 36!
The room that was assigned to us (no. 36) was on the top floor, and was a bit of a struggle to reach, as there was no lift. the room itself was a little tired, but for one night it was ok. however, late in the afternoon and early evening an unacceptable noise became quite audible in the room. it sounded like a pump and would go on and off for a few minutes and then stop. at 7 o'clock i complained and was told that it was the shop next door and would stop at 7.30. it did stop and we went out for dinner. upon our return the noise had returned. to me this was going to go on all night so i complained again. a new guy at reception told us to come back in the morning, and claimed he didn't have authority to change our room and was most evasive when questioned about how full the hotel was. i insisted. our room was duly changed, but the staff's attitude to us change from thereon. on arrival it was all smiles, but surly afterwards. my impression is that room 36 is assigned to people staying one night and they try to kid you that it's all ok and come back in the morning if the problem persists (when it's too late). btw, there is a garden, which is nice, but it was smelly.
