Great hotel in a great location

Had a great long weekend based at the mercure gare montparnasse. the room wasn't massive but certainly big enough for a long weekend, well maintained and clean. breakfast seemed to be a bit of a hit or miss with items not being replaced consistently or indeed quickly but when there, a good selection of goodies to choose from. the hotel is very well situated just a short walk from gare montparnasse but in a street that doesn't suffer from a lot of vehicle traffic. also within a very short walk are some excellent restaurants - charlie birdy and hippopotamus are two that are well worth the visit. it's not a huge hike to the usual tourist attractions - we walked to the eiffel tower, arc de triomphe and down to the louvre on the first day but wimped out and used the metro on the second day for musee d'orsay and notre dame amongst others. being close to a major railway station is very handy due to all the different metro lines that converge there. this does however bring it's own problems in navigating the underground mazes as the metro staff are worse than useless and actually manage to be actively unpleasant. i guess it must be the subterranean lifestyle. all in all, definitely should be on your list of places to stay to consider when you visit paris.

Great hotel

What this hotel does right, that others don't, is paying attention to the small details that really matter: a very comfortable bed (so comfortable that i peeled back the covers to take a photo of the label, for the next time i need to buy a new bed!) a well-designed coffee table with wheels so you can easily move it closer to the sofa, and it is designed with space for your knees to fit under, and sits at waist height when you are seated, so you don't have to lean down to type on your laptop, some hooks in the bathroom for hanging up clothes etc (there are so many hotels that don''t bother to have this very simple but effective feature), a great showerhead with no loss of water pressure, and a toilet separate to the bathroom. also, the bathroom especially was impeccably clean, and breakfast had a very good variety. i got this hotel at an amazing price on hotelsclick, half the price of all the other websites and also half of what my husband's work usually pays for it at corporate rates, which made our stay even more enjoyable). you can walk to montparnasse station, and there are plenty of restaurants around (although we were not impressed by the rudeness of the waiters and the general quality of food. i recommend for a decent meal, you do not try the independent places, but a type of 'chain' restaurant which is managed to give good quality service, food and portion size, rather than the small independent ones which skimp on portions and quality, to try and make a profit: the best meal we had in paris was from the chain called restaurante delarte. there is one in the building of the montparnasse tower, and there are a couple of others around paris. if you see one, eat there, it will be better than those corner restaurants). the only small complaint that i had about this hotel was that on the last day, while we waited in the foyer for our taxi to go to the airport, i had to use the toilet in the foyer for the first time. it was not very clean and had run out of handtowels and there was no airdryer. overall, this was a great stay.
