Discover Cosenza
Cosenza is the main town of the province of Calabria, and is located in the west of the region, north of Catanzaro. The city is an interesting tourist destination, because it is situated between the Tyrrhenian coast and Sila plateau; from Cosenza you can therefore easily reach some of the most beautiful beaches in Calabria, and also the Sila National Park.In any case Cosenza in itself is worth a visit, in order to admire its medieval historical centre, which is really beautiful thanks to the presence of monumental buildings, manors and magnificent churches. Among these, the Cathedral, built in the twelfth century and dedicated to the patron saint, the Virgin of S.S. Pilerio; it is also important the Church of San Domenico, which is part of a monastic complex, dating from the mid fifteenth century, which is located in one of the city's main squares, Piazza Campanella.
Among the most important historic buildings of Cosenza stands the Norman-Swabian Castle, which Frederick II of Swabia decided to build in the thirteenth century. There are several art galleries in the city, as the House of Culture, where many artistic and musical events take place, as well as conventions. In the historical centre of Cosenza, where you can book an hotel thanks to special offers, you can also find the Open Air Museum Carlo Bilotti or MAB. It is an open air art gallery located along the main avenue of Cosenza, that is Corso Mazzini. Here you can admire the sculptures donated to the citizenship of Cosenza by the Cosentine billionaire Carlo Bilotti.
