Discover Bergamo
Bergamo is located in the Lombardy region, right in the middle of Milan and Brescia, near the foothills of the Lombardic Alps. Bergamo has a temperate climate of the mid-latitude, rainy or otherwise humid in all seasons and with hot and sultry summers. The proximity to the mountains allows it to avoid the phenomena of winter fog and summer heat that characterize the city of Milan. The rainfall is concentrated between March and May, with a slight decrease during the summer months, and a flare between October and November. Winter is from November to late March, and is characterized by a low percentage of rainfall, the average temperature of the coldest month, January, amounted to 1.5°C, that of July is of 22.4°C.Bergamo was founded in pre-Roman times as Barra by the Ligurians or Etruscans. The first occupation is that of the Gauls, then the Cenomani and the Senones. The Transpadane Gaul is then attached to the expanding Roman Republic, and from 49 BC also Bergomum became a Roman municipality. The Romans built the center along the axes thistle-decumanus. After the fall of the Roman Empire, was sacked repeatedly, until the arrival of the Longobards in 569 AD, who settled a duchy.
The city of Bergamo is divided into two distinct parts, the High City, the old walled city and Low City, the modern part. The most known and visited Bergamo Alta area is Old Town Square, with the Contarini Fountain, Palazzo della Ragione, the Civic Tower (known as the Campanone) and other buildings that surround it on all sides. Opposite the Palazzo della Ragione, there is the large white building of the Palazzo Nuovo that hosts the Angelo Mai Library. On the south side of Old Town Square are the Cathedral, the Cappella Colleoni of the architect Giovanni Antonio Amadeo which houses the tombs to the commander Bartolomeo Colleoni and his daughter Medea, the Baptistery designed and built by Giovanni da Campione and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore with its beautiful north and south side doors, also of Giovanni da Campione.
In Lower City is located on the main city theater, owned by the City, named after Gaetano Donizetti. Nearby is the church of St. Bartholomew and Stephen, who keeps the table of Lorenzo Lotto said Pala Martinengo. An example of a complete fusion between painting and sculpture is the renovated Cappella della Madonna del Rosario with the stuccos of Muzio Camuzio dated 1752. In the northern area of the lower town is the Accademia Carrara (founded by Count Giacomo Carrara in 1796), which hosts art exhibitions. Other museums are the Donizettiano Museum, the Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (GAMeC), the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art, the History Museum, the Museum Matris Domini, the Archaeological, the Museum of Natural Science, the Botanical Garden.
