Hotel change

Booked holiday break and then discovered that when a problem arose and i tried repeatedly to phone uk no it was a mobile phone you had to telephone and that the rep was in italy. then we had left for break and got telephone call to say that the above hotel was overbooked (god job i had a mobile phone) to say we had to go to g & v hotel. the hotel was a beautiful hotel but i had taken directions for the other one and nothing for this one which took some time to find. so i will now do review for the g & v hotel

Don't take the car

As the hotel does not have it's own car park this is a pain, especially with suitcases. it is also as expensive as london parking prices, even either the hotel discount.

Overnight stay after a friends wedding

Only had an overnight stay here, but had a lovely time, in a lovely big room with a view of river forth and arthurs seat. unfortunately didnt get a chance to use the spa facilities, but may come back another time to do just that :) very central to city centre and although we were able to leave your baggage and pick it up later, it was a miserable rainy day and we went home earlier than planned. breakfast was very nice, but very busy at times. would definitely come back to this hotel before others in the area. great value for money and very classy. only stay 20 mins by train away but it was like a mini holiday for us both thank you carlton hotel ...

Long weekend

Good hotel, comfortable, convenient for all edinburgh attractions. car parking inconvenient and expensive. service very good. front of hotel rooms suffer from noise of the busy north bridge road.

Lovely hotel

Lovely hotel in a great position. we were upgraded to a superior room which was lovely, if we had any complaints it would be that the room was far to warm even with the heating on and all windows open, but i would rather it was warm than cold. overall a lovely place to stay and great vslue for money.

Very pleasant stay

Spent one night in the hotel as mothers day treat. receptionist (barbara) was bery helpful and pleasant. room was lovely (507) with great space, huge bath and fab views across the city and water.very handy for all attractions. we were going to the playhouse which was a max 10 minute walk. for people with special needs there are good fire safety arrangements in place. there is also help available at buffet breakfast for those who are unable to manage the great plate balancing act. breakfast was really fresh with plenty of choice. even although scrambled eggs weren't available on the buffet , the chef gladly made them on request. plenty of helpful staff from all over euope and beyond working hard all the time to servie tea/coffee and clear tables. cleanliness was top notch. i will definitely go back asap. did not use business services but had to give a score in order to submit review

Good location but overpriced

Good central location and easily accessed from train/bus. standard room not worth the money, upgrade rooms ok but i have certainly stayed in better hotels for less money. staff generally doing their best but inexperience obvious in several areas. bar prices questionable - measure of baileys £6.20 - bought a full bottle round the corner in royal mile for £9.99! although the carlton served our purpose for the 2 night stay i felt it was somewhat overpriced for the facilities and service provided - and certsinly not 4 star quality as advertised on some sites.

Birthday weekend

Booked this hotel for the location and it could'nt have been better, just off the royal mile which i loved and only 5-10 min walk to the main shopping area. the check in and out were really busy with a huge queue to check out, so be careful if you need to get away, we were okay but it would have been a nightmare if we were rushing, the people on reception were lovely though. the room was fine, average and comfortable but did'nt seem over clean, lots of dust and we ordered drinks on the first evening and the dirty glasses were not removed, nothing major though. breakfast was great, lots of choice and tasty but on the first morning, we were shown to our table, then the waitress walked away without giving us any information which was quite rude but everybody else was really friendly maybe she was just having a bad day (for your information, you order tea and coffee from the waitress but help yourself to everything else and make your own toast) did'nt use any other facilities so can't comment but overall a great hotel in a fab location.

My carlton visit

My grandson and i have visited the carlton on previous occassions at xmas time as he enjoys the swimming pool and i enjoy the health suite, etc. previously we were provided with a white towelling robe as well as a fresh fruit salad on arrival , alas not on this occassion.we dined in the hotle restuarant and thoroughly enjoyed the meal apart from the cheese board at £7:50 for 3 small slices of cheese.the extractor fan in ther bathroom didn't work.

Excellent stay

Ideal location. we travelled by train, hotel next to station (but we weren't disturbed by any noise) our room was at the back of the hotel. reception staff v friendly & helpful. after arriving at hotel left our luggage until we booked in later in the day. left luggage there the following day, after we checked out & before we caught our train back. room very clean, very comfortable bed. would definitely stay there again. ideally located between princes street & the old town, royal mile.

My stay at barcelo edinburgh

This was my second stay at the barcelo carlton. my room was much smaller from my first stay, when we got there our electric was not working in our room, we had to contact receception twice and my partner had to physically go down to reception to enquire when someone would be up to our room to rectify the problem. each time we were told someone would be straight up. some 40 minutes later we had electricity. the radiator did not work either, therefore no heating in our room. breakfast was a pantomime. there was not enough tables and chairs for everyone. we had to approach a member of staff to ask for coffee as we weren't offered it when we were shown to our table, this was the procedure on our last stay. the second morning, the same happened again, we didn't bother asking this time. i like this hotel but the standard of service/staff was terrible from our last stay. i would like to think i would stay here again if the standard of service had improved.

Edinburgh weekend

Very good hotel, with friendly helpful staff. would happily stay here again. two minor niggles - no bedside light on one side of the bed, and on saturday morning there was a twenty minute queue for breakfast, which we skipped although we had paid for it as part of the package. normally this hotel would be too expensive for me, but got a great deal through hotelsclick - 40% off advertised prices.

Theatre goers

Rooms and location were excellent for our needs although due to its location it was very noisy until 4.00am. we decided to have dinner in the hotel before going to the theatre, we waited 30 mins for the food which was cold and we did not have time to deal with re-ordering so had to eat lukewarm food. breakfast was great once you finally got into the restaraunt, we had to wait 15 minutes to be seated.

Great location between shopping on princes street & royal mile for castle etc. staff helpful. the double room we had was small (attic style) & noisy from road as no double glazing. but others in party had upgraded twin room which was spacious & overlooked north bridge with views down to princes street & gardens. only breakfast taken, generakky good choice.

Hotel carlton

Fantastic hotel, fantastic weekend. apart from trying to get a drink from the bar, we waited 30 mins, before cancelling our order and leaving. the girl stated she was on her own and was doing our order next, rubbish, they were other staff there, it seemed as if the boss was on a night off,and the staff were doing what they wanted!! apart from that, it is a gorgeus hotel. be careful there is no car park, we were directed to the car park were we were to park, only to find on the sunday when we went to pick up car, it was locked, we had parked in the wrong car park and had to get the police!!

Carlton hotel, edinburgh - avoid

Stayed in double family room, 3rd floor, looking onto busy traffic street. warm outside temp night meant stuffy overly warm room that had inefficient aircon. opening windows brought an all-night noisy street into the bedroom. terrible sleepness night, might as well have pitched a tent outside.

Not impressed.

When we arrived there was no record of our reservation. once this was sorted out and we got to our room we was again disapointed. we had travelled with another couple who had booked an identical double room to ours and paid the same price. there room was twice the size of ours with a king size bed, our room was like a box room with a 3/4 size bed. the jacuzzi in the hotel was broke for the whole of our stay. we ordered room servive on our last day and there were items missing.

Excellent location

We chose this hotel because of its convenient location, close to waverly station, the royal mile, and princess street. we booked two double rooms, one for my wife and myself and one our son and his wife. both rooms were on the second floor and were quite spacious, but there was only one bedside light. (we like reading in bed!) our room faced north bridge street so was quite noisy, but the biggest problem was that we could not alter the room temperature. bathrooms were ok but once again lighting could have been better. our son's room faced the opposite direction and was much quieter. breakfast was very good. we did not use the business services or the health club so cannot offer any comment. staff were friendly and helpful

a very nice hotel with a great location just off the high street but also near to princes street. the rooms at the front can be noisey as the hotel is on a busy road so ask for one at the back. the rooms were also very hot. the spa and pool are ok but in need of refurbishment

My mistake

On checking in i realised i had booked for two nights instead of three. on the 23rd september i telephoned the carltron to confirm my booking for three twin rooms for three nights and i was told that all was in order. the carlton had no availability for the third night, the receptionist handed me a list of edinburgh hotels and told me to ring from my room. eventually a receptionist of a hotel which could not accomodate us, found us rooms in another hotel, for which we were very grateful.

Carlton hotel weekend break

The carlton hotel is in a prime location just off the royal mile and in easy walking distance of princes street, edinburgh castle and many other attractions. the staff in the hotel were a breath of fresh air to what you so often find in hotels now. all were very helpful and polite and would talk to you if only to say 'good morning'. they went out of their way to help you and if they couldn't they would get someone who could. room service was very efficient even at the hour we ordered it! the rooms were a good size and turned round quickly and efficiently in the mornings. the whole hotel was spotless and we couldn't have picked a better hotel. the consierge was spot on.

Edinburgh short stay

The carlton was an excellent city centre hotel, from the warm welcome at reception through to the pleasant greeting each morning in the breakfast lounge. after a hard days shopping or a tour the place to relax and put your feet up was at the bar. the cleanliness of the rooms was a joy, and the lifts to our floor were prompt. if i have one grumble it was that the rooms were too warm and the air conditioning did not seem as efficient as it might be. when it came for out time to leave the concierge was most friendly offering to call us a taxi as by that time it had started to rain - again. i would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to stay in edinburgh

Ideal location

Ideal location for a short break right in the heart of the city and close to all the main attractions. staff were very friendly and helpful. leisure facilities were a bit disappointing as they were located in the basement which was rather dull and the decor needed some urgent attention.
