Kos or Cos is a Greek island in the Dodecanese, situated opposite the Turkish resort of Bodrum, ancient Halicarnassus, about 4 km from the coast. On the island there are many archaeological sites as the Asclepeion, which is the temple of Asclepius, greek god of medicine, the baths, the Plane tree of Hippocrates, where the father of medicine spent his time studying, considered the oldest tree in Europe, the Roman odeum, the Neratzia Castle, the Medieval Fortress (modernized by the Knights Hospitallers in the Renaissance) at the entrance of port town of Kos and the fortress of Antimachia. The island was famous in antiquity for being the birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of medicine, who practiced his ars medica in the lower parts of the sanctuary, organised to be a hospital as well as a place to study medicine.For beach lovers there are many beaches to visit. The northern part is always windy, but it has the most crystalline waters rather than the south part, which has the sea always calm, clear water, but darker backdrop. Psalidi beach which is located 2 km from Kos town, is a rocky beach near a tourist resort, Tingaki beach that is located in the north-east, 12 km from Kos town, is one of the most popular and visited beaches, with its 10 km long and deep and crystal clear waters, Mastichari beach which is located in the north-west, is a sandy beach with crystal clear water with a small harbor, where you can embark for the islands of Kalymnos and Pserimos, Marmari beach which is located in the northern part of the island of Kos, near the village of the same name, is a beautiful sandy beach equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas and material for water sports, the beach of Lambi, Kardamena beach which is located in the southern island of Kos, is a sandy beach and crystal clear waters deep, is ideal for fishing, Kamari beach that is located in the west of Kos, for 1 km from the village of Kefalos, is one of the most beautiful and famous beaches of the island, its water, very cold and clear, are ideal for windsurfing, Therma which is located in south-eastern the island is a beach of black sand from the water very hot, because of the springs that emerge from the volcanic rocks below the sea, the beach of Agios Fokas, Agios Stefanos which is a long sandy beach, located 38 km south-west of Kos Town, Agios Ioannis beach which is located in the northwestern part of the island of Kos, near the beach the village of Marmari, owes its name to the nearby early Christian basilica with three naves.
