Discover Bordeaux
Bordeaux is a port city located in south-western France, in the region of Aquitaine, whose metropolitan area is one of the most populous in the country. The city is crossed by the River Garonne, and it is well-known for its wine production, one of the most popular among French wines, which is produced in the surroundings of Bordeaux.
However, Bordeaux is worth a visit not only for the chance to taste the wine produced here, such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot, or to experience some food and wine tours, but also and above all for the attractions concentrated in its historic centre, which was declared part of the UNESCO World Heritage in 2007.
Among the most interesting monuments in the historic centre of Bordeax are: the Grand Theatre, built in the eighteenth century in Comedy Square, an ancient Roman forum; the St. Andrew's Cathedral, built in Romanesque style in the eleventh century, and later enriched with a Gothic portal and a tower; the Square of the Bourse, dating from the eighteenth century, which has changed its name several times before acquiring the present one in 1848, and in which stands the statue of the Three Graces.
Very interesting are the gates of Bordeaux, located at different corners of the city; among them the Cailhau Gate, built in the fifteenth century after the victory of King Charles VIII against the anti-French League, the Grosse Cloche (big bell), also dating from the fifteenth century, which houses a huge bell of 1775, and the much more recent Gate of Burgundy, dating back to the mid-eighteenth century and built in front of the famous Stone Bridge. This bridge connects the city's right bank with the district of Bastide.
Built in the eighteenth century to host the archbishop of Bordeaux, the Rohan Palace is another place of tourist interest in the city, both for its architectural features and for being the residence of Napoleon I. Today the building houses the town hall of Bordeaux. Another tourist attraction in Bordeaux is also the district of the Chartrons, the antiquarians and contemporary art district, in which they is a concentration of art galleries, restorers and cabinetmakers shops, antique shops.
Bordeaux therefore holds significant tourist attractions, mostly concentrated in the historic centre, so it is an attractive tourist destination, which allows you to combine your passion for art and history with the love for food and wine and local traditions.
