Discover Malaga - Costa Del Sol
Malaga is an enchanting sea city on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, located in the South of Spain in the independent Andalusia at about 100 km from the Gibraltar strait. Malaga is the economical and cultural capital of the Costa del Sol.
Tourism in Malaga
The different civilizations that populated the area left remarkable archaeological traces, such as the roman theatre (1st century CE), the Castillo de Gibralfaro from the Arabic period and the Alcazaba, a palace/fortress that dominates the city. You can't miss a visit to La Manquita (the cripple), a big cathedral with a missing campanile tower. In Malaga you can also visit the house where Pablo Picasso was born and the museum dedicated to the painter.
Besides the large historical and artistic heritage, Malaga offers its visitors lovely beaches that make it perfect for a vacation under the sun. Among the most famous beaches are: Malagueta, near the center of the city; La Caleta; El Candado; Benalmádena and Torremolinos along the western Costa del Sol. These are just a few beaches in Malaga: for more information on what to do and what to see in Malaga, visit our blog.
Historical and cultural heritage
Malaga has a huge variety of colorful and joyous religious and folkloristic festivities. Among the most important are:
- La Cabalgada de los Reyes Magos
Children love this feast in which the three wise men parade through the city, throwing sweets and gifts to the crowd. If you want to know more about this ancient tradition, read the article on our blog.
- La Semana Santa
Along with the Semana Santa in Siviglia, Malaga's feast is one of the most important feasts in Andalusia. Processions start on the Friday before Palm Sunday and they go on until Easter. If you want to witness the Holy Week in Malaga, we suggest staying at the Tribuna Hotel, because it is located right in front of the Gallery of the Poor, where the celebrations take place.
- The Feria de Agosto or Feria de Malaga
It's a feast that involves flamenco, chants, horse parades, carousels, and fireworks. During the day, the Feria de Malaga happens within the city, while in the evening it moves towards the suburbs where you will find restaurants, bars, clubs, and booths that sell churros.
How to get to Malaga
Malaga's airport is the main airport in the Costa del Sol. Low-cost and flagship carriers connect the Andalusian city to the main European cities. We suggest using buses and trains to move around: they are an optimal mean of transportation and they connect Malaga to the rest of Spain. You can reach Malaga via sea as well, since the harbor is the second biggest cruise-ship harbor in Spain. The best cruise-ship companies of the world make landfalls in this harbor.
