Cape Verde is an archipelago of ten islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean, about 500 kilometers away from the coast of Senegal. The archipelago is of volcanic origin: three of its islands are quite flat and sandy, while the other ones have a predominantly rocky terrain and more vegetation.

The climate of Cape Verde is milder than that of the African continent, thanks to the mitigating effect of the ocean. The average temperature ranges from 23°C in January to 29°C in September, while the rain falls mainly between August and October, often irregular and characterized by sudden and heavy downpours.

The capital and largest city of the archipelago is Praia, which is located on the island of Santiago. The official language is Portuguese, due to the long domination which began in the fifteenth century. However, the Cape Verde Creole is used in every day conversations by almost all the inhabitants.
