Retro chic?

I have stayed here a number of times. on my first trip, the room smelled of my grandmother, who has been dead for over 30 years. this time i walked into the room and it smelled of my boyfriend. i don't know what this says about the cleaning products used! the rooms are quite spacious, but poorly designed with not enough plugs for the modern traveller. the furnishings are reminiscent of university halls of residence in the late 1970s and about as comfortable. the bathrooms have everything, except a double sink, but somehow appear very utilitarian rather than luxurious. i fail to see what value added a stool and a trolley provide. breakfast, if included in the room rate, is adequate with a good selection of juices, but its choice and presentation could be more appetising. it also appears to be rather difficult to get a decent, breakfast-sized cup of milky coffee. you either have to have a tiny cup with hot milk on the side or a glass (plastic) beaker which is half full of foam. jams are not home-made and come in twee little jars on the table. the restaurant offering is unambitious, pseudo-italian. the most interesting thing i have eaten there is the frankfurter club sandwich, which was tasty but could have done with a little more green sauce and toasted bread. the accompanying chips looked good at first sight (almost like home-made) but were an odd shape, on closer inspection, and appeared to have been "extruded". i left them. however, there are plenty of excellent eating establishments within walking distance, so i would not let this put you off. the pool is rather cold and does not have any grab rails, which makes doing lengths "challenging". whilst the architecture and location are fine, this establishment misses a lot of the luxury touches. if anyone is able to explain to me why it is acceptable to do a turn down at 18:30 in the evening, i would be happy to hear the reasons. although i will probably stay there again over the summer, i just cannot see why this establishment has a 5* rating.
