Has to be the best place to stay in havana's "old town"

Having never been to havana before we took a punt on the santa isabel based on the pix and online reviews and i'm delighted to report that it was the right decision, as this would have to be the best hotel in habana vieja. in fact the signature shot doesn't do the property justice as it's right on an expansive and unusually quiet square (plaza de armas) that wraps around three sides of an elegant old world park, virtually on the waterfront in the very centre of the very best part of old havana. it isn't cheap... but in havana, no hotels of any quality are. and it isn't absolute 5 star luxury in modern hotel terms, but it's as good or better than most boutique european hotels and its atmosphere we were looking for and santa isabel delivers it in spades. friendly and helpful staff. excellent housekeeping. a good restaurant (breakfast under the colonnade overlooking the square). a nice interior courtyard bar. clean and comfortable rooms with everything in working order. a great find. highly recommended.
