The picturesque town of Daruvar is a popular health centre of western Slavonia. The mildly alkaline warm water (around 46 °C) with calcium, magnesium and hydrocarbonate is suitable for treatment of rheumatism, gynaecological diseases, sterility, inflammatory and degenerative diseases of the backbone as well as for postoperative rehabilitation. Mineral mud of volcanic origin is also used in the treatment. Interesting tourist sights of the town of Daruvar include the Baroque manor, the Baroque parish church, the spa building. There are several fortified burgs in the surroundings. The town of Daruvar is the centre of the Czech minority in Croatia. The surrounding Czech villages cherish the Czech language, customs, folklore, tunes, etc. The most famous event is the Czech harvesting ceremony Obzinkove Slavnosti, held every year with the closing of harvest activities in another village. Forested slopes of the nearby Papuk Mountain offer fine hiking, climbing and hunting opportunities. The large fishpond Koncanica and the nearby rivers Ilova and Pakra, rich in freshwater fish, provide excellent angling opportunities. Traditional Slavonian cuisine, the specialities of the Czech and Italian minorities, game and fish together with quality wines (Daruvarski Riesling) and local beer (Staro Cesko) are a part of the local gastronomic offer. Good traffic connections (railway and roads) provide excursionists and tourists an easy access. DARUVAR, a town and health resort in western Slavonia, 21 km north of Pakrac; elevation 160 m. Chief occupations are farming, metal industry, beer and oil production, a brickyard; health tourism. Daruvar is located on the main road (M14.01) Novska Daruvar Virovitica and the railway Banova Jaruga Virovitica. In the Roman times, a bathing resort called Aquae Balissae, of which several monuments have been preserved (three brickwork tombs with mosaics, wall fragments). In the Middle Ages there were Héviz (i.e. Toplica), Cetvrtkovac and Podborje with the Benedictine abbey (Helena de Podborje); the wall paintings with large ruins of the abbey were still mentioned in 1777. Today's Daruvar developed within the estate of the count Antun Jankovic 17601777. The two-storey Baroque manor with a projection on the front and a mansard roof was commissioned by A. Jankovic between 1771 and 1777. Traces of the former beautiful park can be seen next to the manor. The Jankovics had the spa buildings erected: Anthony's Bath was built on the Roman foundations by Macedonian masters, and John's Bath was erected between 1810 and 1818. The parish church of the Holy Trinity from 1764 is a Baroque building with three entrances and two towers at its sides. The apse and the massive belfry were added later. The Orthodox church dates back to the 18th century. In the park by the baths there is a fountain with a bronze female statue, a work by A. Augustincic (1927). others.City Daruvar is for the second year running prettiest city in continental Croatia. The park within the complex is positioned containing 65 different kind of trees like 250 years old Ginkgo tree from China, Variegatum from Arizona and others. Pleasant Hotel Termal renovated and extended in 1996 is also here. The smaller one, Balisse is just few minutes walking distance from here in the traffic friendly downtown.
