El tovar
El tovar has one thing going for it - the location, which could not be bettered. i understand that the restaurant is also something special but as we had not booked in advance, we could not get a table. apart from that it could not be rated higher than 3 stars, possibly 2. we arrived in the dark and the rain. there was no help available for three heavy suitcases to be taken to the first floor. we were told the 'the porter' (one porter for 68 rooms?)"was busy with another guest" the receptionist eventually took pity and helped us with the last suitcase. the room was small and the bathroom antiquated. ok, the place was built in the early part of the last century. the air conditioner clunked in and out noisily at brief intervals. the service in the cocktail lounge was erratic. we stood by a dirty table for five minutes or so and it was only when i attempted to clear it myself that any action was forthcoming. to sum up, this is a three star hotel with two star service in a five star location.
