Parapat has been a resort area since before World War II, an inviting area with a cool and dry climate, perfect for holidays and vacations. With the beautiful Lake Toba anchoring its list of tourist attractions, it has been a much-visited retreat for the past several years due to the boom in the tourism industry. This area is inhabited by the Batak people, more specifically the Batak Toba and Batak Simalungun tribes. North Sumatra’s rich and diverse cultural heritage is highlighted annually during the Lake Toba Festival, which has been held from June to July since the 1980s. JH 10/06
