Discover Pitigliano - Grosseto

The magic village of Pitigliano is located in the heart of Tuscany, between and Rome. It is an immense block of yellow stone, wrapped in the peaceful Maremma hills and surrounded by intense green vegetation, that majestically rises and dominates over the surrounding space.
Like a pearl in its shell, like a nest doll, this sculpture of soft tuff magically encloses an ancient village, that incorporates an Etruscan essence, a Roman spirit, a medieval core and a Jewish soul.
This is the magical power of the little village of Pitigliano, also called the Little Jerusalem, both for its stone architecture which reminds the Holy City and for its history. This sounds even more incredible in an area traditionally representing the heart of the Roman Catholic tradition. Yet, this is definitely the magical power of the little big Pitigliano, an unusual example of peaceful coexistence of two seemingly parallel traditions that lived here together in harmony.

What to see in Pitigliano

Going to discover this little town indispensably means to meet all its souls that influenced each other over the centuries. In a succession of Etruscan caves and walls, gates, arches, alleys, staircases, houses and shops dug into the tuff, you will see the medieval and renaissance core of the village:

  • Piazza della Repubblica and its famous fountain (La fontana delle sette cannelle), connected to the Medicean aqueduct
  • the catholic Cathedral of Santi Pietro e Paolo
  • the ancient church of San Rocco
  • the Orsini Fortress with the Diocesan Museum
  • the Civic Archaeological Museum of Etruscan Civilization

Pitigliano and the Jewish ghetto

Perfectly integrated into the rocky architecture of the old town, the Jewish Quarter opens with a sign at the entrance.
This is the very heart of the Little Jerusalem and you can still perceive its essence.
The path to the discovery of the ghetto starts with the Museum of Jewish Culture.
Inserted in the typical tuff caves, you can then explore the ritual bath (mikvah), the Kosher wine cellar, the Kosher slaughter house, the dyeing room and the traditional Passover matzoh oven (forno delle azzime, where the traditional unleavened bread was cooked). The synagogue appears in the weaving of the narrow streets carved into the tuff. In the 1960s part of the sixteenth-century synagogue collapsed. In 1995 it was actually rebuilt following the original design. Its fine and elegant interiors enclose the Aron (sacred traditional furniture) and the central Tevà (the wooden pulpit). Today is occasionally used for traditional ceremonies. In the courtyard a panel remembers the local victims of Nazism.

In Pitigliano Jewish tradition is naturally rooted in non-Jewish culture, and vice-versa, as evidenced by the culinary tradition, the Hebrew inserts in the local dialect and the local influences in the Jewish cemetery itself. Pitigliano is a place where time stops; it is a body of many souls all indispensable for its harmony, elements that can not exist without each other.
