El Salvador is the smallest and at the same time the most densely populated country in Central America. It is bordered to the west by Guatemala and to the north and east by Honduras, and its eastern most region is opposite Nicaragua, on the Gulf of Fonseca, while to the south of the country the land meets the sea by the Pacific Ocean.

The climate in El Salvador is tropical and characterized by really wet and dry seasons; the temperatures do not vary much throughout the year, but are influenced by altitude: they are quite high along the Pacific coast, and more moderate on the central plateau and in the mountainous areas.

The capital is San Salvador, but other important cultural and commercial centres are also Santa Ana and San Miguel, which play an important role both in the country and in the whole Central America.
The official language is Spanish, while the most practiced religion is Christianity, and especially Catholicism.
