There are so many places worth a visit in his fantastic country, starting from Mexico City, its capital, one of the oldest owns in South America, founded on the ruins of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan.
In this immense metropolis, most of its tourist attractions can be found in the historical centre. Not to be missed are Plaza de la Constitución, also known as Zócalo, the National Palace, the Cathedral, the colonial buildings, museums and, last but not least, the Temple Mayor archaeological area.
The city is also famous for its parks and the bright, crowded shopping streets.

A necessary stop must be done in Acapulco, the world famous sea resort, a star system favourite place with its big bays and its golden beaches. It is the right place for those loving the sea and tropical landscapes. But mostly for those willing to have fun and enjoy the bright, exciting night life.
Guadalajara is also a place you cannot absolutely miss. This city is famous for being home of mariachi, the famous musical groups of Western Mexico, and tequila. With its beautiful parks, its squares, monuments and fountains, is just waiting to be discovered. Without forgetting a stop in the Mariachis Square to listen to traditional music while drinking a good Margarita.

One of the best preserved colonial towns in Mexico is San Cristóbal de las Casas, in the Chiapas state. Here live Maya descendants indigenous groups, speaking their language and wearing their traditional costumes.
Of course, you cannot miss a visit to discover the many, charming archaeological sites such as the Teotihuacan ruins, the capital of the first, great Mexican civilization, also known as the City of Gods. Here you can see the Pyramid of the Sun, so named because its summit is aligned with the axe of the setting sun, and the Pyramid of the Moon, the Palace of the jaguars and the Palace of Quetzalpápalotl.

Another must is Tulum, located in the Yucatan peninsula. In this magical place on the sea you can see the ruins of an old Maya fortress city. The archaeological site of Chichén Itzá, chosen as a World Heritage, with its mighty Pyramid of Kukulkán with its engraved Mayan calendar is another place absolutely worth a visit.
The Yucatan peninsula also features another interesting place, Cancun, a famous and bright tourist place surrounded by the most beautiful beaches of Mexico, such as Playa del Carmen, the small fishermen village of Puerto Morelos and Puerto Escondido, with its 6 metre waves attracting tourists from all over the world.

Another place we strongly recommend is the city of San Miguel de Allende in the Guanajuato region, 1,900 metres (6,234 feet) above the seal level whose perfectly preserved historical centre dates back to seventeenth and eighteenth century. This place is also full of ateliers and workshops of local and international artists.
For those loving the sea and the unspoiled nature we recommend a trip to the Marieta Islands, a few miles off the Nayarit costs, an approximate 45 minute sail. This uninhabited islands are part of a protected national park. Its crystal clear water host an outstanding marine fauna with animals such as sea turtles, dolphins and rays. The biggest island also features the extraordinary Playa Escondida, the hidden beach, a round strip of sand that can be reached only through a tunnel surrounded by crystal clear waters.

MAIN FESTIVALS

Many Mexican holidays have a strong impact on Mexicans. Apart from the classic ones such as Christmas, New Year’s Day, Easter and those dedicated to the saints, other celebrated holidays are the feast of Love and Friendship on Valentine’s Day, the feast of the Flag on 24 February, the one celebrating the beginning of the Mexican revolution on 20 November and many other events of historical anniversaries and important Mexican people.
The most heartfelt feast is undoubtedly the Day of the Dead, the Día de Los Muertos on 1 November. Contrary to popular belief, this is a very happy feast, where families gather around the tombs of their beloved relatives who, on such day, enjoy food and spend a lovely time with their families.
Those willing to fully appreciate this feast should go to Lake Patzcuaro in Michoacan, a four hour bus drive from the capital. Here you can witness a charming, spectacular celebration where hundreds of people on the night of the dead row to the Island of Janitzo at the centre of the lake, home of the graveyard which they reach holding a lantern in their hands.

TRADITIONAL CUISINE

Mexico is famous worldwide for its cuisine. There are so many specialities and such high quality that the Mexican cuisine has been awarded a World Heritage by UNESCO. Its very spiced and intense dishes vary from region to region, but the most famous ones – something you should absolutely not miss - are tacos and guacamole sauce, tortillas, meat with chili sauces and last but no least burritos.
As far as drinks are concerned, the most famous is, of course, tequila, a liquor coming from agave. Michelada, a beer with salt, green lemon and sometimes also spicy sauces, is also worth a try.
