Location

The Balestri is located on one of the edge points of the ancient roman and medieval Florence. Two thousand years ago a river-port to Pisa and the sea rose here and here the workers of the Guild of Wool hang out their clothes. In one of the sitting-rooms of the Hotel is a copy of a painting by Bellotto showing “la Porticciola” (small port) on the Arno, the stairs going down to the river and the washerwomen rinsing clothes. The near Old Bridge with Via de’ Benci form the eastern boundary of the city according to the first municipal circle (1172) at that time formed by walls and moats. Bardi, Alberti, Peruzzi are names of the families who lived in the facing quarter of S.Croce. They built there loggias and palaces and were owners of a few Chapels in the Franciscan church of S.Croce.
